The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It has a long history and rich cultural significance.
According to legend, the festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the Warring States period. Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after being betrayed and exiled by his king. Local people raced their boats to save him, but it was too late. To prevent fish from eating his body, they threw rice dumplings into the river. This practice has become the traditional food of the festival, known as zongzi.
In addition to eating zongzi, people also engage in various activities during the Dragon Boat Festival. Dragon boat races are the most famous, with teams of rowers paddling in unison to the beat of drums. Other customs include hanging calamus leaves and mugwort, wearing jade amulets, and drinking realgar wine to ward off evil spirits.
The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time to remember the past but also a chance to appreciate the beauty of Chinese culture. It is a time for families to gather, share food, and participate in traditional activities, fostering a sense of unity and cultural pride.
